City Winery of Philadelphia presents ACOUSTIC SOUL SUMMER NIGHTS this June with Syleena Johnson!
SYLEENA JOHNSON ~ A Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer, Syleena Johnson has built a lasting career as a distinctively forthright R&B artist equipped with a powerful voice. The daughter of unsung soul great Syl Johnson, she was born in Harvey, Illinois and grew up listening to Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Tina Turner, the Dells, and Mavis Staples. She performed in local bands and sang in her church choir at Greater Christian Unity, and later worked in classical and gospel choirs as well as in jazz ensembles at Drake University and Illinois State University, where she majored in music.
Johnson’s soulful rasp, reminiscent of old-school R&B singers, set the tone for her confessional songs. Her first recordings appeared on a mid-’90s album of duets with her father, but she made her proper debut with Love Hangover (1999), which featured covers of Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover” and Womack & Womack’s “Baby I’m Scared of You.” She then signed with the Jive label for three albums, all of which reached the Top 20 of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. On Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness (2001), Johnson confronted her romantic pitfalls and coming of age with guest appearances by Buddy Guy and R. Kelly. Between Chapter 2: The Voice (2002) and Chapter 3: The Flesh (2005), she appeared on fellow Chicago native Kanye West’s Grammy-nominated Top Ten Hot 100 hit “All Falls Down.”
Johnson went independent for Chapter 4: Labor Pains (2009) and toured with Lalah Hathaway, Indira Khan, and Lisa Simone as Daughters of Soul. After Chapter 5: Underrated (2011), supported by a deal with the Shanachie label, she co-starred in TV One’s R&B Divas: Atlanta and appeared with some of her fellow reality stars on the R&B Divas (2012) album.

Started in 1990 as a small gathering of friends behind the Museum of Science & Industry, the Chosen Few Picnic & House Music Festival is the world’s longest-running event dedicated to House Music. Nicknamed the “Woodstock of House Music” for its family-reunion vibe, the Picnic & Festival attracts more than 40,000 fans to Chicago’s Jackson Park each year, and counts among its supporters former United States President Barack Obama.
About the Chosen Few DJs:
Founded in 1977 by Wayne Williams, the Chosen Few DJs is a music collective that was among the first wave of DJs and producers in Chicago who created what became known as House Music. Since 1990, the Chosen Few DJs – Williams, Jesse Saunders, Tony Hatchett, Alan King, Andre Hatchett, Terry Hunter, and Mike Dunn – along with childhood friend Kim Parham – have organized the Chosen Few Picnic & House Music Festival, drawing more than 40,000 fans each year. The collective hosts events in cities across the United States and perform at festivals around the globe, including Amsterdam Dance Event, Winter Music Conference, Tribe Tambor Cruise, and Suncébeat. They also produce hit music, from Terry Hunter’s and Wayne Williams’ GRAMMY-nominated “It’s Your World” by Jennifer Hudson and NAACP Image Award-winning production on “Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics” to Mike Dunn’s critically acclaimed, “My House from All Angles”, the smash “In The Beginning (There Was Jack)”, an update of the classic House track featuring Chuck Roberts and Monique Bingham, and Jesse Saunder’s 2019 Billboard chart-topping “Higher”. Event Details
Thursday Aug 3rd – Sunday Aug 13th, 2023
SPAIN is the largest country in Southern Europe. The mainland of Spain is bordered to the north by France, to the West by Portugal, to the East by the Mediterranean Sea and is the only country in Europe to have a physical border with the African continent (Morocco). Madrid is the capitol and largest populated city, with other major urban areas that include Valencia, Seville, Malaga, Billbao, and Barcelona. Spain’s official language is Spanish and the dominant religion is Roman Catholic. The country has a rich multi-ethnic history of empires and recorded cultures settling on the Iberian Peninsula territories as far back 35,000 years ago.
Today, Spain is a highly developed nation with the fourteenth biggest global economy. In 2017, it was ranked as the second most visited country in the world with over 82 million foreign visitors. The summer months are especially popular and a great time to be there!
Barcelona is the cosmopolitan center of Spain’s Catalonia region, where the scenic neighborhoods and lively culture bring diverse tourists from all over to this part of Europe. There’s cuisine and wine to sample in addition to art galleries and famous locations like the Sagrada Familia, Valencia Central Mercado, the Black Madonna at the Montserrat Monastery, the Dali-Theatre Museum and the medieval city of Girona (where the Game of Thrones TV show is filmed).
The island of Ibiza is a hot spot & has become a legendary resort getaway that needs little introduction. You can tan on the amazing white sand beaches by day and party with celebrities & jetstters at the hottest venues by night. Other optional stops in 2023 include Lisbon & Croatia. It’ll be another Summer experience you don’t want to miss with the Funky People!

WE RECOMMEND THIS EVENT: Atlanta’s House in the Park is a musical exploration of the soul and a vision to see House Music become a unifying movement, transcending every strata of society – ethnic identification, race classification, age and lifestyle. DJ Ramon “Rawsoul” Guyton, the visionary behind Rawsoul Entertainment, and Kai Alce, the man behind record label NDATL, launched House in the Park in 2005, as a gift to the city and the community that supports the monthly music-social offering “The Gathering.” HITP adds much needed variety to the Atlanta music scene and features a range of House Music’s emerging local, regional, and international talents. DJ Ramon Rawsoul orchestrates this effort simply for the joy of bringing his favorite music genre to life in a tangible, meaningful way.

Event Details
Thursday Feb 8th – Thursday Feb 15th, 2024
BRAZIL is the largest Latin country in the Americas with cultural influences of this country are a blend of Native American, African, European and Portuguese customs. As an added fact, it claims the most recognized and uninhibited of all Carnival celebrations on the globe.
For the people of Brazil, Carnival is an enormous festival of pride, culture and party energy before Lent each year. While Salvador da Bahia claims the largest celebration, Rio de Janeiro’s, massive Street Parties (called Blocos), lavish Masquerade Balls and prestigious Samba school competition make it the epic televised event watched around the world! The signature parade competition in Rio’s Sambadrome Stadium go on through the entire week, where the top samba troops contend fiercely for the coveted championship crown. Showcased are large, hand-crafted, visually impressive parade floats from each Samba school, led by a beautiful “Samba Queen”. The Samba Queen is accompanied by thousands (yes, thousands) of male & female singers, drummers and dancers in dazzling costumes performing choreographed routines to the Samba beat. It is such an overwhelming, exuberant display of artistry & showmanship – that if you look closely, you’ll may even spot several Samba dancers with absolutely no costume at all! (WHOA)
We can say this event never disappoints! After a covid cancellation & delay the past two years, we set our sites for the proper return next February. Join the Funky People for the the biggest party on the planet at Carnavale 2024!

Enjoy the hot UK Soul sounds of INCOGNITO Live this June!
INCOGNITO ~ The enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last four decades. Look at the recent history of soulful UK artists and you will find any number of short-lived acts that have achieved pop success. Narrow it down to those that have created a uniquely British sound and have endured as a global phenomenon on their own terms, and the list becomes short. Dues, then, to Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and Incognito, formed in 1979 and celebrating almost 40 years of positive vibes and undiluted Jazz-Funk.
Having moved to London from his native Mauritius at age ten, the UK live scene was a key inspiration for Bluey. “Defining moments for me?” Bluey reminisces.“Discovering Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, of course, as well as Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, and Kool & The Gang. But the real link to Incognito’s genesis came from UK bands like Gonzalez and FBI. These were people that lived in your town and walked your streets.
“My first band was New Life with David Grant. His cousin, Joe Williams, would later manage my second band, Light of the World, which was formed during the years I worked in Joe’s record shop in Tottenham. The band rehearsed upstairs and some of the future band members would pop in to jam,” recalls Bluey. “I switched from bass to guitar when Paul ‘Tubbs’ Williams came in; he was only 14 and blew everyone’s minds!”
Chris Hill heard the band in 1978 and promptly signed them to his Ensign imprint. “We ended up at Phonogram Studios and could suddenly buy any equipment we wanted in their shop. No one stopped to think, ‘I can buy a car!’ All we could see was wah-wah pedals and phaser units!”

ONE SHOW – ONE NIGHT in Philadelphia this May with Vivian Green!
VIVIAN GREEN ~ Born in Philadelphia Vivian Green was raised in a home where Motown classics were always blaring. Her parents were avid music lovers with talents of their own. Her mother sang and her father, an engineer, played the trumpet. She began singing at age five, started playing piano by eight, and by eleven began writing songs. She knew by age thirteen, that she wanted to sing professionally. She honed her craft at the piano everyday after school, writing mature love songs far beyond her years.
At fifteen she began to record at multi-platinum group Boyz II Men’s studio. This gave Green a taste of life as an artist and led to an opportunity to write with the band. At seventeen she received her first professional songwriting credit co-writing the song “Dear God” on their platinum selling album Evolution. Green was also offered a recording contract from Ruffhouse Columbia, but her protective parents felt she wasn’t ready.
Determined to be a recording artist, Green continued to record relentlessly. Her mature, sultry voice and knowledge of material allowed her to sing in some of Philadelphia’s premiere jazz clubs despite her age. She also obtained a job singing with two of the top party orchestras in Philadelphia. Additionally, Green sang background for renown soul singer/actress Jill Scott.
Green teamed up with Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Eric Roberson to create the demo that would win her a deal with Sony Music. The demo contained her first smash hit “Emotional Roller coaster”. Her debut album A Love Story released in 2002 and was certified Gold. It received rave reviews from People, Billboard, Rolling Stone, and USA Today to name a few. Her second album Vivian released in 2005 and produced “Gotta Go Gotta Leave” a no.1 AC/Dance hit.
