Thursday Feb 27th - Thursday Mar 6th, 2025 BRAZIL is the largest Latin country in the Americas
BRAZIL is the largest Latin country in the Americas with cultural influences of this country are a blend of Native American, African, European and Portuguese customs. As an added fact, it claims the most recognized and uninhibited of all Carnival celebrations on the globe.
For the people of Brazil, Carnival is an enormous festival of pride, culture and party energy celebrated annually before Lent each. While Salvador da Bahia claims the largest celebration, Rio de Janeiro’s, massive Street Parties (called Blocos), lavish Masquerade Balls and prestigious Samba school competition make it the epic televised event watched around the world! The signature parade competition in Rio’s Sambadrome Stadium goes on through the entire week, where the top samba troops in the city contend fiercely for the coveted championship crown. Showcased are large, hand-crafted, visually impressive parade floats from each Samba school, led by a beautiful “Samba Queen”. The Samba Queen is accompanied by thousands (yes, thousands) of male & female singers, drummers and dancers in dazzling costumes performing choreographed routines to the Samba beat. It is such an overwhelming, exuberant display of artistry & showmanship – that if you look closely, you’ll may even spot several Samba dancers with absolutely no costume at all! (WHOA)
After the past eleven years of attendance, we can say this event never disappoints! Make plans as we set our sites on a proper return next February. Join the Funky People for the the biggest party on the planet at Carnavale 2025!

START OF THE NEW YEAR DC SHOW: Throughout a career that dates back to the early ’80s, Will Downing has been among the steadiest and most productive artists in R&B. Not cut out to hop aboard commercial production trends for the sake of attaining mainstream success, he has tended to stick resolutely to a sophisticated and modern sound based in soul and jazz. He mixes refined originals with spirited covers, and combines his deep and rich voice with a restrained “song first” approach. A native of Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, Downing began his recorded professional career as a background vocalist during sessions for several acts, including Jennifer Holliday, Nona Hendryx, and Rose Royce. After he was part of Arthur Baker‘s one-album group Wally Jump Jr. & the Criminal Element, he signed a solo deal with Island and debuted with a cover of Deniece Williams‘ “Free”. His first three albums include “Will Downing” (1988), “Come Together as One” (1989) and “A Dream Fulfilled” (1991). The latter, featuring “I Try” (Top 20 Billboard R&B Hit) and a version of Paul Davis‘ “I Go Crazy,” significantly increased his fan base of listeners who craved mature R&B and vocal jazz unaffected by hip-hop. With six of his albums reaching the R&B Top 20, he continues to work, delivering Lust, Love & Lies: An Audio Novel in 2010, after which he released a handful of albums on his Sophisticated Soul label. He moved to Shanachie for Black Pearls (2016), on which he paid tribute to Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carn, and Randy Crawford, among other women who have inspired him. In 2017 he delivered the studio album Soul Survivor, featuring the single “Feeling the Love” with vocalist Avery Sunshine.

WINTER 2025 LIVE SERIES: City Winery Presents: Jeff Bradshaw on February 14, 2025. Funky, soulful, jazzy and fearless when he takes the stage, Jeff Bradshaw has turned the lowly trombone into a powerhouse of sound. Jeff has brought his unique trombone stylings to the music of Erykah Badu, Musiq Soulchild, Floetry, Darius Rucker, Mary J. Blige, Kirk Franklin, Dave Chapelle, Jay Z, The Roots, Jill Scott, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson and others.
Many think of the trumpet or saxophone as the only possible front-runners with which to lead a jazz band. Jeff Bradshaw turned that notion on its head when he signed with Hidden Beach Recordings as a solo act. This North Philly showman can do things with a trombone that many trumpet and saxophone players can barely approach. Simply put, Jeff is otherworldly when he takes centerstage to wow an audience––and he does it all with the traditional underdog of the brass horn family.
Jeff started his musical journey from a dilapidated North Philadelphia church where brass horns were regularly celebrated and used in praise music. The lively horn section was reportedly the main attraction to the church. Exposed to this horn playing culture at an early age, Bradshaw originally chose baritone horn and sousaphone as instruments of study. However, fate was calling Jeff to a different direction.
In high school band, Bradshaw noticed how students enthusiastically flocked to the “sexier” instruments––like drums, trumpet and sax––while completely ignoring the lonely stack of trombones. Something told Jeff to go to the stack of neglected instruments to find his unique voice. That’s exactly what he did. Bradshaw began a decades long quest to show the world how powerful, moving and sexy the trombone could be when handled by a maestro. The rest is history.

WINTER 2025 LIVE SERIES: City Winery Presents: Avery Sunshine on March 11-12, 2025. Denise Nicole White known professionally as Avery Sunshine (sometimes stylized as Avery*Sunshine, is an American singer, songwriter and pianist. Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, to Ruth Eleanor White and Irving Cyril White, she began playing piano at 8, after she saw a classmate perform, and learned to read hymns before beginning to study classical music at 11. At 13, she expanded her repertoire to include jazz and had her first recital. Three years later, her aunt, a church choir director, asked Sunshine to fill in for her during a Sunday service at a Catholic church; she was subsequently hired by churches of all denominations, including the AME Church, where she performed with the award-winning Wilmington/Chester Mass Choir.
In college, White met Maia Nkenge Wilson, a vocal major, and together they formed a gospel and R&B singing duo, DaisyRew. In addition to performing in Africa, DaisyRew performed at churches in the area and at clubs, including the Apache Café, which was noted for launching the careers of several prominent artists, including India.Arie. Wilson was cast in a Broadway role following college, and Sunshine was hired as the Minister of Music at the St. Paul AME Church in Atlanta. DaisyRew continued to perform when Wilson, on breaks from her theatrical career in New York, returned to Atlanta.
While working at the St. Paul AME Church, White met Dana Johnson, a guitarist, producer and songwriter who had previously worked with India.Arie. White, Johnson and Wilson began working together in 2003 with Johnson writing and producing the music, in addition to managing DaisyRew’s career. Soon after, Wilson was again cast in a Broadway production and she left for New York. White then adopted the name AverySunshine.
In 2005, White and Johnson recorded “Stalker”, a neo soul song, which a friend, Chris Brann, set to a house beat. The track became a dance hit on a Japanese record label, which led to a series of live dates in Japan.
White and Johnson began work on what became AverySunshine’s self-titled first album, released in 2010 on their own label, BigShine. Recorded mainly at White’s home with ProTools, the record included guest appearances by the pianist Takana Miyamoto, the vibraphone player Roy Ayers and Christian McBride. The record was praised by the media, with USA Today calling it “refreshingly original” and The Washington Post describing it as “a radiant brand of soul”. White — a single mother of two – focused on AverySunshine, but also accepted jobs as a keyboard player with artists including Tyler Perry and Jennifer Holiday and worked as a choral director for Atlanta performances by artists such as Michael Bublé, Anthony Hamilton and David Foster. Since 2010, Avery Sunshine has toured consistently, and developed a following throughout the United States, the UK, Europe and Africa.

WINTER 2025 LIVE SERIES: City Winery Presents: Loose Ends on March 11, 2025. Loose Ends is a successful British R&B band formed in 1980 and signed to Virgin Records in 1981. Many urban contemporary hits followed, such as: “Hanging on a string” reaching no.1 in the U.S charts and no.13 in the U.K charts, and “Slow Down” reaching no.27 in the U.K charts and no.1 in the U.S charts. Loose Ends are the first British R&B band to have a no.1 gold selling Album in the U.S going on to sell millions. After Jane Eugene and Steve Nichol left the group, Carl McIntosh went on to create and produce the “Look How Long” album released in 1990, with the hit single “Don’t be a fool” reaching no.13 in the U.K charts and no.10 in the U.S charts. Laying to rest the assumption that the group had broken up.
The album features many of the UK’s top vocalists, Laurneá Wilkerson, Linda Carriere, Christine Levin, and Sunay Suleyman. Carl McIntosh’s musicianship, singing, songwriting & production can also be heard on songs by Caron Wheeler, Ruth Joy, 5-Star, Phylis Hyman, D’angello, Angie Stone and Leon Ware to name a few. Carl’s work can be heard throughout early releases prior to 1980 right up to the present. And he is currently in the studio writing new songs for the new singles and album to follow with his current band members, Linda Carriere, and Christine Levin. And Loose Ends will be touring the USA soon
Accept no imitators! When you see Loose Ends, you’ll experience something far better from the source….

SPRING CONCERT SHOWS IN DC: WAR is one of music’s defining and most enduring soul/funk groups, was founded in Long Beach, California, in 1962. In 1970, producer Jerry Goldstein united the seven-piece band with former Animals lead singer Eric Burdon; the alliance produced the No. 1 worldwide hit “Spill the Wine.” Stepping out on their own in 1971, they launched a fruitful career with a dynamic sound that fused R&B, rock, Latin music, jazz, and blues. In 1973, their smash album The World is a Ghetto vaulted to No. 1 on Billboard’s pop and R&B charts behind the crossover success of two top-10 singles, the album’s socially conscious title song and its rollicking follow-up “The Cisco Kid.” Over a long and glittering career, WAR has rung up more than 20 multi-platinum, platinum and gold albums and singles. in 2023, fronted by co-founding member Lonnie Jordan, the group celebrated 50 years of 1973’s #1 Billboard top-selling album, The World is a Ghetto, with a 50-date summer tour, remixes, new releases and more. Join us for a weekend of great sounds from this legendary band!

Loose Ends are the first British R&B band to have a no.1 gold selling Album in the U.S going on to sell millions.
Soul Clap time travels on a musical spaceship of dopeness… Charles Levine aka Lonely C and Eli Goldstein aka Bamboozle cut their teeth in Boston during the 90’s rave heyday and quickly learned the power of P.L.U.R., a commitment to PEACE LOVE UNITY & RESPECT in the community, on the dancefloor, and in the DJ booth. They found an early mentor in Caril Mitro at local record shop Vinyl Connection, who taught them that HOUSE WEARS MANY HATS, “the ethos that the music we love comes in many shapes and sizes”. These values have led to a one-of-a-kind take on electronic music that breaks through limitations and genres with a deep commitment to carry on the traditions of our musical foremothers and fathers.
Spreading their wings beyond Boston, Soul Clap found acclaim through a series of edits, remixes and originals on Wolf + Lamb, and became a household name with their mixes of Extravaganza and Bakerman. They performed everywhere from The Marcy Hotel, to DC10, to Trouw, to Panorama Bar, to The Electric Pickle and on their travels discovered EVERYBODY’S FREAKY UNDERNATURE’S KINGDOM. EFUNK sounds like modern electronic funk and became their calling card, as the title of their first album in 2012, which led to a collaboration with George Clinton and honorary entry into the P-Funk family. EFUNK remains a bridge between the discerning futurism of underground dance music and the charisma and boldness of funk. Always pushing new boundaries, always traveling through time and space, The Clap is on a mission to change the world one dance floor at a time. Dr. Funkenstein has taught us well: free your mind, and your ass will follow.

2025 US MINI TOUR – FOR PLEASURE TOUR: City Winery Presents: Omar on January 21, 2025. The musical history of British soul pioneer Omar is renowned – the Lyefook family has musical talent embedded deep in their DNA, Omars’ father Byron worked as a studio musician and drummer with Bob Marley, Horace Andy and even The Rolling Stones. Omars’ younger brother, the Grammy winning producer, remixer and DJ professionally known as Scratch Professer has been making jaws drop since the age of 13, stunning the crowd at the 1988 DMC UK Finals with his turntable skills. Samia Lye-Fook (Omar’s sister) is a renowned vocalist in her own right, and a BRIT School alumna, then there’s their big brother….Omar.
Born October 14, 1968, in London but raised in Canterbury, gifted, prolific and considered a musical prodigy; Omar learned his craft classically, playing the trumpet, piano, bass guitar and percussion. A former principal percussionist of the Kent Youth Orchestra and later a graduate of the Guildhall School Of Music, Omar has been making music for more than 32 years.
Back in 1985 he released his first single ‘Mr Postman’ on his father Bryons’ Kongo label, which was also the original home for his first album, which contained the track that changed everything… ‘There’s Nothing Like This’. That album was re-issued by Gilles Peterson on his Talkin’ Loud imprint in 1991. This album established Omar as a stand out and unique artist, with ‘There’s Nothing Like This’ hitting the charts, so began a musical chain of events that has continued unabated up to the present day. JANUARY SHOW in WASHINGTON, DC: Kindred the Family Soul is simply Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler; artists, songwriters, lovers, family. Both got their start as teenagers. Fatin producing his first released material with Bell Biv Devoe at 17 and Aja receiving her first recording contract from Delicious Vinyl at 14, these two “grew up” in the record business. In 1997 they were introduced via hip hop band, The Roots, production camp. Fatin was hired to write songs for Aja’s solo project at the time. By the fall of 1998 they became husband and wife and while assuming the roles of a new couple and new parents, Fatin took a job selling appliances and Aja became a homemaker caring for their first born, Aquil. After being unexpectedly let go from his job the couple contemplated the future. They’d developed a strong creative chemistry for Aja’s solo project so they decided to try performing as a team and Kindred The Family Soul was born.

WINTER 2025 LIVE SERIES: City Winery Presents: Robert Glasper on January 15-17, 2025. Hailing from Houston, Texas, Robert Glasper is a jazz pianist with a knack for mellow, harmonically complex compositions that also reveal a subtle hip-hop influence. Inspired to play piano by his mother, a gospel pianist and vocalist, Glasper attended Houston’s High School for the Performing Arts. After graduation, he studied music at the New School University in Manhattan, where he found performance work with such luminaries as bassist Christian McBride, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and others. After graduating college, Glasper worked with a variety of artists, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, vocalist Carly Simon, and rapper Mos Def. The pianist released his debut album, Mood, on Fresh Sound New Talent in 2004. Canvas and In My Element followed in 2005 and 2007, respectively, on Blue Note Records.
In 2009, Glasper released the forward-thinking album Double Booked, which featured a mix of modal post-bop and funky, ’80s Herbie Hancock-inspired numbers with two separate bands. The first of these was his trio with drummer Chris Dave and upright bassist Vicente Archer; they recorded five originals and a cover of Thelonious Monk’s “Think of One.” These tracks were followed by five more originals by his electric band, dubbed the Robert Glasper Experiment, featuring Dave, electric bassist Derrick Hodge, and Casey Benjamin on saxes and vocoder.
Three years later, the Robert Glasper Experiment (with a slew of guest vocalists) issued their first stand-alone album, Black Radio, for Blue Note, which sought to blur the boundaries between jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and rock & roll. It entered the jazz chart at number one and went on to win a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Later in the year, Glasper and Blue Note released Black Radio Recovered: The Remix EP. 9th Wonder, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Pete Rock were among those who participated. The following year, the Robert Glasper Experiment (then including Hodge and Benjamin with drummer Mark Colenburg) returned with their equally star-studded sophomore album, Black Radio 2. It also won a Grammy, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance for a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Jesus Children of America.”
Glasper returned to his original acoustic piano trio format with bassist Archer and drummer Damion Reid. They cut 2015’s Covered live at Capitol Studios in front of an invited audience. The album’s pre-release single was a reading of Radiohead’s “Reckoner”; it was released in April, followed by the album in June. Glasper also played on Kendrick Lamar’s celebrated To Pimp a Butterfly and Maxwell’s blackSUMMERS’night. For Don Cheadle’s 2016 Miles Davis biopic, Miles Ahead, the pianist curated the soundtrack and wrote original music, which included contributions from Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Gary Clark, Jr. Glasper also recorded Everything’s Beautiful, a Davis tribute album in celebration of the trumpeter’s 90th birthday. Glasper reimagined classic tracks with an all-star list of collaborators who included Wonder, Muldrow, Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kaiyote, and John Scofield. Featuring the single “Ghetto Walkin’” fronted by Bilal, the album was issued that May. the Robert Glasper Experiment returned to the studio in early 2016 with a different m.o. Instead of working on the pianist’s music or covers, the quartet members wrote and arranged together in the studio for the first time. The resulting Artscience was issued in September after the pre-release singles “Day to Day” and “Thinkin’ About You.” ~ Matt Collar & Thom Jurek.
